Is It Time? Knowing When to Consider Hospice

One of the most common things we hear is, “I wish we’d called sooner.” Knowing when to begin hospice care can feel uncertain — but waiting too long can mean missed opportunities for peace, comfort, and connection.

Signs It May Be Time to Consider Hospice

  • The patient has a life-limiting illness and is no longer seeking curative treatment.

  • There are frequent hospital visits or worsening symptoms.

  • The person is experiencing weight loss, fatigue, or confusion that isn’t improving.

  • Medical professionals estimate a life expectancy of six months or less (this does not mean care ends at six months).

  • Emotional exhaustion and stress are taking a toll on both patient and family.

How to Talk About It: Start with openness and love. You can say:

“I want to make sure you’re as comfortable and supported as possible. Have you thought about hospice care?”

The right time for hospice is when quality of life becomes more important than extending time at any cost. Envy Hospice is here to help you make that decision with compassion and clarity.
